Q&A: Kunming to showcase rare coloured diamonds at CARAT+

Hong Kong-based Kunming Diamonds, one of Asia’s leading coloured diamond companies, is seeing growing demand for pink, blue, green and orange stones. Harsh Maheshwari, who runs the company with his father, speaks to David Brough ahead of CARAT+ 2018.

Q: What variety of natural coloured diamonds will you be presenting at CARAT+, in terms of cut and size? 

Harsh Maheshwari: Kunming has a diverse collection of GIA certified bubblegum pinks, deep ocean blues, bright yellows and neon greens ranging from 0.10 carats to 15 carats. We also provide our clients with access to a limited number of rare diamonds from Rio Tinto’s Argyle Diamond Mine.

Q: What colours in your ranges are currently the most popular?

HM: All shades of pink, blue, green and orange.

Q: What are the main challenges in the global marketplace for natural coloured diamonds today?

HM: There are no shortcuts in the gem and jewellery business. For us, the quality of materials and fine cutting, as well as knowledgeable and experienced sales staff, are important factors in tackling challenges. I also believe that the trust we build with our clients is the most important element.

Our entire team understands that building trust with customers takes time - requiring consistent sincerity and helpful service.

Q: Do fully disclosed synthetic diamonds pose a competitive challenge to natural diamonds?

HM: They run as a parallel market as long as they are disclosed. Those who want natural, will always choose natural. It’s all about the right sort of education.

Q: As a Hong Kong-based company, what appeals to you about exhibiting at CARAT+? Why does the show attract you as an exhibitor?

HM: Despite increased competition, we have moved into various markets to balance the challenges faced by our business. Our global network allows us to have immediate market access to information and knowledge, which enables us to adapt quickly.

Having said that, CARAT+ is a great platform for us to grow and retain our European presence. It gives us an opportunity to reconnect with our past, present, and potential clients.
