Q&A: Insights into CARAT+ with returning exhibitor Roberto Coin

Eponymous brand owner and fine jeweller, Roberto Coin, reflects on a successful CARAT+ 2017 and explains to David Brough why he has decided to return to Antwerp for CARAT+ 2018 in May.

Q: You are returning to CARAT+ for a second year. How was your experience in 2017 and what convinced you to take part in 2018?

Roberto Coin: Antwerp is the place where the best players of the diamond industry provide the highest quality stones and jewellery with a large content of diamonds. After all, Antwerp has one of the biggest diamond bourses in the world and is home to many of the largest diamond companies.

I am coming back for the second time for all these reasons and because, last year, I was very pleased to be part of a serious event that offered a new opportunity for the jewellery world to choose from the widest selection of diamonds.

Q: What kind of response did you get to former Bond girl, Caterina Murino, wearing Roberto Coin diamond jewellery at CARAT+ Night 2017? Did it generate international publicity for your brand?

RC: I met Caterina for the first-time last year, thanks to CARAT+, and it has been a pleasure, both for me and for all my staff who collaborated in the event. She is a lovely person and her beauty and our diamond creations enhanced each other. Moreover, being a Bond girl she sparked international feedback.

Q: What do you hope to achieve at CARAT+ 2018 in terms of finding new customers and developing relationships with established ones? What other advantages do you foresee from taking part again this year?

RC: Last year we exhibited at CARAT+ with no expectations, as our purpose was to be part of something new, a new idea. I am sure that with time and patience we will develop important relationships with new clients.

Q: What new Roberto Coin collections or special pieces will you be showing at CARAT+ this year?

RC: We will be bringing at least 300 items of mostly diamond jewellery to CARAT+. We will also bring one or two exceptional ‘one-off’ pieces.

Q: What new ranges or collections have worked particularly well for Roberto Coin over the last six months?

RC: The Cento diamond jewellery collection is doing very well for us. People are looking for something totally different - more unique, and the Cento collection is unique! The Animalier collection of limited edition pieces depicting animals is also doing well for us. As 2018 will be the Chinese Year of the Dog, we look forward to presenting pieces showcasing the dog at CARAT+.

Q. What are the challenges of being a fine jewellery brand in the global marketplace at the moment?

RC: The world is changing and global brands are adapting. Different brands have different issues. Branding is all about credibility, and companies now have to enhance their credibility and do better.
