Weekly Digest: Alrosa auctions, WFDB Congress dates and trade show positivity
In a new series of weekly reports, CARAT+ rounds-up the biggest news headlines from the international diamond and diamond jewellery industries. This week, Alrosa announces an auction of rough diamonds over 10cts and the WFDB reveals the dates of the 2018 World Diamond Congress.
Alrosa to host auction of large rough diamonds at IDWI
Russian miner Alrosa will host an auction for a selection of special size rough diamonds over 10.8 carats at the International Diamond Week in Israel (IDWI) 2018, organised by the Israel Diamond Exchange (IDE), on February 5-7, 2018.
The company is offering for sale 117 gem-quality lots with a total weight of 1,905 carats, Alrosa said. The largest diamond weighs 37.38 carats.
All the stones were mined from deposits owned by PJSC Alrosa and its subsidiaries.
“Special size diamonds over 10.8 carats form a rather small share of the output – about 0.6%,” said Alrosa Vice President, Yury Okoemov.
“Auctions for the sale of such diamonds repeatedly attract a significant number of participants, especially in Israel. Many companies from Israel, including relatively small ones, specialise in this product and understand it very well.”
Strong attendance as VICENZAORO kicks off trade fair season
Turnout was high at the January edition of VICENZAORO, the first major international trade show of 2018, auguring for a strong export performance by the Italian gold jewellery sector.
Rising production and consumption of gold jewellery signalled a favourable outlook for the sector, said Lorenzo Cagnoni, President of organiser Italian Exhibition Group (IEG), in an opening address on January 19.
The VICENZAORO show, which ran until January 24, is a conduit for exports of Italian gold and silver jewellery to leading markets such as the United Arab Emirates and the United States.
Halls were packed as retailers from around the world came to stock the latest designs in their jewellery shops. High attendance and exhibitor numbers hints at a strong performance at other leading European trade events, including CARAT+, in the coming months.
